01 · The problem

Deleted, formatted, the card threw an error. The photos are still there, for now.

Deleting does not delete

Deleting or formatting only removes the name from the list: the bytes stay on the card until something writes over them. Every new photo you take afterwards is an old photo that disappears.

Tools that write to the card

Many tools "repair" by writing to the device, and so does Disk Utility. It is the fastest way to lose what could still be saved.

The card the camera cannot read

Corrupted table, "needs to be formatted", slow reads with errors. The file system died; the files, not necessarily.

02 · How it works

It reads the whole card. Then it puts the files back together.

Raw scan, sector by sector: it does not depend on the file system being intact, or existing at all.

01 · Pick the device

Card, USB stick, SSD, drive or a raw .img/.dmg image. The app asks for the administrator password and opens the device read-only.

02 · Scan

Every sector is read; a failing sector is read three times. The app looks for the signatures of more than 40 formats and validates the internal structure of every file it finds.

03 · Pick and recover

Nothing is copied during the scan. You see the list, preview with Quick Look, tick what you want and the app writes it to a destination folder, checking the SHA-256 of every file.

The detail that makes the difference

Original name, folder, date and the trash, when the card still has them.

On FAT32 and exFAT cards the app also reads the deleted directory entries: it recovers the original name, folder and date, follows the cluster chain when it survived, and separates what is in the trash from what was actually deleted. What the signature alone would not find, the directory delivers.

For a JPEG whose beginning was overwritten there is the header transplant: the surviving body gets the header of another photo from the same camera and opens again.

03 · Formats

More than 40 formats, validated by structure.

The signature says where a file starts; the format’s internal structure says where it ends and whether it is whole. A file is only marked intact when the format closes, the rest comes out as partial, and you decide.

Each format has its own detector, which understands the file’s structure: it is not a search by extension.

And it does not need a file system.

The scan is raw: every sector is read and every signature is searched for, whether or not a file table exists. Formatted card, lost partition, "needs to be formatted", files are rebuilt from what is in the sectors. Where the FAT survived, the names come back with them.

A fragmented file comes out partially by signature; the cluster chain is followed when the FAT still has it. An overwritten file does not come back, which is why the rule is to stop writing to the card and scan first.

Read-only, always

The device is opened read-only and unmounted during the scan. There is no option to write to it, not even by accident.

Quick Look on any file found, read straight from the card. You check before you recover.

Original names and folders

On FAT32 and exFAT the name, folder and date come back with the file, and the folder structure can be kept on export.

Sector map

You see the whole card as it is read: what was read, where there is a file, where there is a damaged sector.

Report with hashes

SHA-256 of every file, verified on copy, and a session report in JSON and text, with the hash of the report itself.

Header transplant

A JPEG with an overwritten beginning gets the header of a sibling photo from the same camera and opens again.

07 · FAQ

Questions.

I deleted the photos and kept shooting. Is there still a chance?
It depends on what was written over them. Every new photo takes sectors that belonged to old ones; what was not overwritten comes back whole, what was partly overwritten comes out partial or not at all. Stop using the card and scan: the free scan shows exactly what is still there, and the preview proves the file opens.
The card asks to be formatted. Should I?
No. Formatting rewrites the file table and, on some cards, the first sectors, exactly where names and the beginnings of files may still live. Scan first; format after recovering.
Does the app write anything to the card?
Never. The device is opened read-only and unmounted during the scan, so not even macOS writes to it. Recovered files go to the destination folder you choose, on another disk.
Why does it ask for the administrator password and Full Disk Access?
To read the raw device (/dev/rdisk) macOS requires both: any tool that reads sectors asks the same. The engine runs with that privilege only to read; the app writes the files to the destination with your normal permissions.
Does it recover my camera’s RAW?
TIFF-based RAW (NEF, ARW, CR2, DNG, ORF, RW2, PEF, RAF and others) and Canon’s CR3 have their own detectors, which validate the file’s structure. The full list is in the Formats section.
What about a large video scattered across the card?
If the card is FAT32 or exFAT and the cluster chain survived, the app follows it and the video comes back whole. Without the chain, a fragmented file comes out by signature only up to the first break, and is marked partial, so you know.
Does it work on the Mac’s internal drive?
It does, by file signature (APFS is not interpreted, so no names). On a drive in use the system keeps writing; for the serious case, make an image of the drive and scan the image.
What can I do without a licence?
Everything but copying: scan any device, see the full list with name, folder, date and integrity, and preview every file with Quick Look, read from the card itself. No deadline and no size limit. The licence only comes in when you recover the files to the destination.
How many Macs can I use it on?
Two, on the same licence. If you need more, add machines at checkout or later, from your account.
What happens after a year?
Nothing changes in the app you bought: it keeps working forever. What ends is the right to new versions. Renewing is optional, costs less than the licence, and is only worth it if the new version interests you.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet. It is planned, and whoever buys the Mac licence will be told when it ships.
