DeepRecovery reads the card sector by sector, ignores the file system and rebuilds every file from its signature and its internal structure. Photos, RAW, video, audio and documents, with the original name when it is still on the card. You see everything before recovering.
No account · no card · signed and notarised by AppleDeleting or formatting only removes the name from the list: the bytes stay on the card until something writes over them. Every new photo you take afterwards is an old photo that disappears.
Many tools "repair" by writing to the device, and so does Disk Utility. It is the fastest way to lose what could still be saved.

Raw scan, sector by sector: it does not depend on the file system being intact, or existing at all.
Card, USB stick, SSD, drive or a raw .img/.dmg image. The app asks for the administrator password and opens the device read-only.
Every sector is read; a failing sector is read three times. The app looks for the signatures of more than 40 formats and validates the internal structure of every file it finds.
Nothing is copied during the scan. You see the list, preview with Quick Look, tick what you want and the app writes it to a destination folder, checking the SHA-256 of every file.
On FAT32 and exFAT cards the app also reads the deleted directory entries: it recovers the original name, folder and date, follows the cluster chain when it survived, and separates what is in the trash from what was actually deleted. What the signature alone would not find, the directory delivers.
For a JPEG whose beginning was overwritten there is the header transplant: the surviving body gets the header of another photo from the same camera and opens again.
The signature says where a file starts; the format’s internal structure says where it ends and whether it is whole. A file is only marked intact when the format closes, the rest comes out as partial, and you decide.
Each format has its own detector, which understands the file’s structure: it is not a search by extension.

The scan is raw: every sector is read and every signature is searched for, whether or not a file table exists. Formatted card, lost partition, "needs to be formatted", files are rebuilt from what is in the sectors. Where the FAT survived, the names come back with them.
A fragmented file comes out partially by signature; the cluster chain is followed when the FAT still has it. An overwritten file does not come back, which is why the rule is to stop writing to the card and scan first.
The device is opened read-only and unmounted during the scan. There is no option to write to it, not even by accident.
